For a beach house, we believe the question should always be:  What is it made of, and is that material appropriate for the coastal environment where it will actually live?

What Materials Actually Last in a Beach House Outdoor Kitchen?

There isn't one perfect material for every beach house.

Here are three materials worth understanding.

316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel, the Premier choice for a Beach House Outdoor Kitchen

For severe coastal exposure, 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel is one of our preferred materials. The key difference between 316 and more commonly used stainless steels is its composition.    316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, an alloying element that significantly improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting and corrosion. That added protection makes 316 particularly well suited for outdoor kitchens exposed to salt air, coastal humidity, and saltwater environments.

That makes 316 an excellent consideration for:

• Beach houses and waterfront properties
• Homes exposed to salt spray and salt-laden air
• Outdoor kitchens near saltwater pools
• Coastal environments with high humidity

Stainless steel isn't the only material worth considering at the coast.  Marine-grade polymer cabinetry offers some compelling advantages because the material itself will not rust or corrode.

Quality marine-grade polymer can also be:

• Waterproof
• Resistant to rot
• UV stabilized
• Easy to maintain
• Available in numerous styles and colors

It can be an excellent solution for homeowners who want coastal durability with a different aesthetic or price point than stainless steel.

As with any material, however, not all polymer cabinetry is created equally.

The construction, UV stabilization, hardware and overall engineering still matter.

3.   Cast Aluminum with Powder Coat

Cast aluminum can also provide excellent strength while allowing homeowners to achieve a very different look from traditional stainless steel cabinetry.  Again, there is no reason every coastal kitchen needs to look alike.

Outdoor Kitchen Appliances for Your Beach House: Marine-Grade Is the Coastal Standard

You can build exceptional cabinetry and still create problems by installing the wrong appliances.

Grills, refrigerators, sinks, faucets, ice makers, beverage centers and vent hoods also need to be selected for the environment in which they'll operate.

For severe coastal applications, we frequently specify 316 stainless steel components where appropriate, particularly when corrosion resistance is a priority. All wires should have protective coating to ensure against corrosion and salt spray

Refrigeration deserves additional attention. Outdoor refrigeration must deal not only with weather but also with substantial changes in ambient temperature.  Most importantly, outdoor refrigeration must remain food safe.

And if your beach house is exposed to strong winds, ventilation, grill placement and hood design become especially important.

For added durability and a more refined feel, look for double-walled drawers with soft-close hardware. These details help protect what is stored inside, improve everyday use, and create a cabinet system better suited for demanding coastal conditions.

What About the Countertop?

Countertop selection is another area where coastal kitchens can go wrong.

A countertop needs to handle UV exposure, moisture, heat, stains and changing temperatures, but it also needs to be compatible with the cabinetry beneath it. Depending on the project, options may include appropriately selected stone, porcelain and even 316 stainless steel countertops and backsplashes. The right answer depends on the home's exposure and design.

This is another reason we don't believe in designing a coastal kitchen from a predetermined package. 

Your environment should help determine your materials—not the other way around.

What Does “Field-Tested” Really Mean?

This is one of the biggest differences in how we approach outdoor living at Riviera Outdoor Décor.

Our half-acre outdoor showroom is not climate controlled—and that's intentional.  We put outdoor products where they're actually supposed to live- outside

Our outdoor kitchens, furniture and accessories experience coastal sun, heat, humidity, wind and salt-laden air. Some are positioned near our saltwater pool, adding another demanding element to the environment.  This way, our clients get to see and witness for themselves what their outdoor kitchen and furniture will look like after 10,20, 30 years or more? 

We want to know:

What happens after five years?

What happens to the finish?

Do the doors still close correctly?

How does the hardware perform?

Does moisture get inside?

What maintenance does it actually require?

And ultimately:

Would we put it in our own coastal backyard?

The Problem With Climate-Controlled Outdoor Showrooms

There is nothing wrong with displaying samples indoors. In fact, Riviera has a climate-controlled sample and design room where we meet with clients to review cabinetry, finishes, colors, materials and custom design options comfortably.

But that's different from using an indoor showroom as proof of outdoor durability.  Almost everything looks beautiful when it's new, polished weekly and sitting in air conditioning.

Outdoor living isn't displayed indoors—it's experienced.

That's why we believe homeowners should have the opportunity to see how products perform after living outside in the conditions for which they're being recommended.

Questions to Ask Before Buying a Beach House Outdoor Kitchen

Before investing, ask your designer or dealer:

1. What exactly are the cabinets made from?
2. If stainless steel, is it 304 or 316?
3. Has the product been tested in a coastal environment?
4. How does the finish perform around salt air?
5. What material are the hinges, fasteners and hardware?
6. Are the cabinet openings protected with gaskets or seals?
7. How does the cabinetry perform in strong winds?
8. Are the appliances appropriate for coastal exposure?
9. What maintenance will actually be required?
10. What should I expect this kitchen to look like 10, 20 or 30 years from now?

That last question may be the most important one.

There isn't one answer—and anyone telling every coastal homeowner to buy exactly the same material may be oversimplifying the decision and maybe costing them money
