Preface- The Coastal Outdoor Kitchen Remodel, a Case study
A custom Built House and Outdoor Kitchen by the Builder
Imagine beginning a coastal outdoor kitchen remodel at a custom waterfront beach house as the sun sets across the water. An infinity pool seems to melt seamlessly into the horizon, while the surrounding outdoor living space invites you to slow down, entertain, enjoy life with family and friends and take in the view.
At the center of it all is the outdoor kitchen—a space designed to bring family and friends together and make the most of life on the coast.
It is everything coastal living is supposed to be: beautiful, effortless, relaxing, and built around unforgettable moments outdoors.
Three years later, the outdoor kitchen begins to fail.
What once felt like a dream space is now showing the effects of a demanding coastal waterfront environment. At the same time, the homeowner wanted more: additional appliances, greater functionality, and a better entertaining experience—without increasing the existing footprint.
That became the challenge. And, at Riviera Outdoor Décor, those are the projects we love most.
Existing condition of the outdoor kitchen
Climate for the coastal outdoor kitchen remodel
The redesign began with accessing the environment itself. The gorgeous house set less than 150 feet from the water. The intense sunlight reflected off the water and off the salt water pool throughout the day. There was a lot of salt air and humidity to account for along with strong coastal winds that moved across the property. Salt air, humidity, and heat placed constant demands on every exposed surface and component.
Examination of the Preexisting Outdoor Kitchen
Riviera Outdoor Décor’s engineering and design teams conducted a thorough examination of the existing outdoor kitchen cabinets and identified several significant construction and performance concerns. Most importantly, safety concerns
The original kitchen had been constructed using cement board with a stucco finish over a traditional 2x4 wood-framed structure—an approach we do not recommend at all. More concerning, no heat jacket was found around the cooking appliance, creating an additional safety concern. The outdoor kitchen space was poorly planned with the outdoor sink taking up 75% of the usable space.
Inside the cabinetry, the team discovered unfinished flooring and areas of standing water, indicating inadequate drainage and insufficient protection from moisture. Proper ventilation was also absent, further increasing the potential for trapped heat, humidity, mold, deterioration, and pest intrusion. Storage capacity was limited, and evidence of unwanted pests was found inside the cabinet areas as well.
Summary of existing Outdoor Kitchen
Although the exterior of the outdoor kitchen cabinets showed little visible deterioration, the internal condition revealed significant construction and safety concerns.
Inspection found evidence of moisture intrusion and standing water within the cabinet cavities, creating conditions that can accelerate deterioration of internal framing, fasteners, and surrounding construction materials. In a coastal environment, persistent moisture combined with salt air and humidity can further increase the risk of corrosion, material degradation, mold, and premature structural failure.
The cabinet system also lacked adequate ventilation, which is critical in an outdoor kitchen installation. Proper venting helps dissipate heat, reduce trapped moisture, and prevent the accumulation of combustible gases within enclosed cabinet spaces.
Additional concerns included the absence of proper separation and heat protection around cooking appliances. Without correctly installed heat shields or insulated jackets where required, adjacent combustible materials may be exposed to elevated temperatures, creating a potential fire hazard.
While the exterior finish gave the appearance of a serviceable outdoor kitchen, the concealed conditions raised serious concerns regarding moisture management, structural integrity, ventilation, appliance installation, and overall fire safety.
Together, these findings demonstrated that the original outdoor kitchen had not been designed or constructed to properly manage the demanding conditions of a coastal environment, where moisture, humidity, salt air, wind, heat, and pests must all be considered from the beginning of the design process.

The Design- the Coastal Outdoor Kitchen Remodel begins
What our homeowner wanted to accomplish
Safety, was the top concern for our client. Along with the need for the outdoor kitchen to endure the coast. The appliances needed to be coastal, marine grade in order to perform in a harsh coastal environment. The layout needed to deliver more function and more storage for this active, outdoor family all within the same footprint. And the finished design had to feel as refined and effortless as the waterfront setting surrounding it while matching the existing architecture.
This was not simply an outdoor kitchen replacement. It was an opportunity to redesign the outdoor kitchen around the way the homeowner truly wanted to live—beautifully, comfortably, and confidently on the coast with his new outdoor kitchen made to last and enjoy with their active outdoor family.
The Design Plan for the Coastal Outdoor Kitchen Remodel
The Riviera Outdoor Décor engineering and design team began by evaluating the conditions that would directly influence the performance, safety, and longevity of the new outdoor kitchen. The assessment considered the home’s coastal exposure, prevailing wind speeds, salt concentration, humidity, intense sun, architectural style, available footprint, and selected countertop material.
Based on those conditions, the team determined that Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel was the most appropriate material for this coastal outdoor kitchen remodel. The combination of high winds, aggressive salt exposure, persistent humidity, and the design requirements of the home called for a material capable of providing both structural strength and long-term corrosion resistance.
Marine Grade 316 Stainless Steel offers an exceptional level of protection and durability for luxury Beach House Outdoor Kitchens. Designed for demanding coastal environments, 316 stainless steel provides superior resistance to salt air, moisture, corrosion, rust, and pitting—conditions that can quickly compromise less suitable outdoor kitchen materials.
For beachfront homes, waterfront properties, and outdoor kitchens located near saltwater pools, 316 stainless steel is particularly well suited for long-term performance. Its strength and corrosion resistance help it withstand the realities of coastal living, including strong winds, intense sun, heat, humidity, moisture, and year-round exposure to the elements.
Just as importantly, the material complemented the architecture of the home and the selected countertop, allowing the redesigned kitchen to achieve the durability required for the site without sacrificing the clean, refined aesthetic expected in a luxury waterfront setting.
The 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel cabinetry also allowed the design team to improve the kitchen’s overall functionality and address several of the concerns discovered during the original inspection. The redesigned layout created substantially more usable storage while improving protection within the cabinet interiors.
The 316 Stainless Steel Outdoor Kitchen Cabinet doors and drawers feature weather-resistant rain gaskets and magnetic closures designed to help limit intrusion from wind-driven rain, blowing sand, moisture, and humid coastal air. Full-extension drawers incorporate double-wall construction, premium undermount glides, and soft-close technology, providing greater strength, smoother operation, and a more refined user experience.
Together, these improvements transformed the outdoor kitchen from a visually attractive but vulnerable structure into a more durable, functional, and thoughtfully engineered space designed specifically for the demands of waterfront living.
The Final Result: A Coastal Outdoor Kitchen Designed to Perform
In the end, the most important result was a happy client—and a coastal outdoor kitchen that was safer, more functional, and better suited to the demands of the waterfront environment.
The redesign addressed the safety concerns identified in the original kitchen, while also correcting drainage issues and eliminating the deteriorating conditions that had affected the previous cabinetry. Storage capacity was significantly increased, giving the client a far more organized and functional outdoor cooking space.
The new design also made better use of the available footprint. By reducing the amount of space dedicated to the outdoor sink, we were able to create more room for the appliances the client would actually use, including an upgraded outdoor grill and the addition of a griddle.
The result is a more efficient coastal outdoor kitchen designed around the way the client cooks, entertains, and enjoys the waterfront—while providing greater durability, safety, storage, and long-term functionality.
What This Project Teaches
This project demonstrates that a successful coastal outdoor kitchen begins with designing for the environment—not simply adapting an indoor-style kitchen for outdoor use. Salt air, humidity, wind, standing water, drainage, heat, and long-term corrosion all have to be considered before materials or appliances are selected. It also shows why proper construction details, ventilation, drainage, appliance clearances, heat protection, and marine-grade materials are so important in waterfront applications. Just as importantly, the remodel proved that better design can improve functionality as well as durability. By reevaluating how the client actually used the space, we were able to increase storage, improve safety, add more useful cooking appliances, and create an outdoor kitchen better suited to coastal living.
The Riviera Outdoor Décor Takeaway
At Riviera Outdoor Décor, we design for the environment first. Coastal outdoor kitchens face challenges that ordinary outdoor spaces do not—salt air, humidity, wind, intense sun, moisture, and corrosion can quickly expose weaknesses in materials and construction.
That is why every project begins with understanding the site, how the client plans to use the space, and which materials and construction methods are best suited for long-term performance.
A coastal outdoor kitchen should not simply look beautiful on installation day. It should be designed to perform beautifully for years to come.
Built for the Coast. Made for Endless Good Times.
