Outdoor Kitchen- Small Space with Big Style

An outdoor kitchen is wonderful for fresh air, relaxation and most of all good food! Add all this to a beautiful water view and it can feel like heaven!

However coastal conditions can be highly corrosive for outdoor kitchens and furniture.  In addition, to capture the perfect view of the water for a beautiful focal point, you may have to design for a small space.  These were the two design challenges we faced with this design: 1)  Design an outdoor kitchen and patio area that will last and resist the corrosive conditions associated with being located next to the water. 2) Increase conversation and seating areas without obstructing traffic flows.

To begin, let's take a look at the "Before" picture and what our clients wanted to achieve in their new space.

The Design Interview: Assessing the Needs for the Outdoor Kitchen and Patio Space

Following our segment on Coastal Living TV for marine grade outdoor kitchens, our client made a showroom appointment  at Riviera Outdoor Decor to view our three different selections of outdoor kitchens. After discussing the location of the home being directly on coastal water, it was clear our clients were interested and needed the marine grade outdoor cabinets and outdoor appliances.  Our client also had a request for outdoor furniture that would not rust and something more than a table that was 'always in the way'.

Step One- The Design Process

We followed our process for local clients in Corpus Christi and scheduled a measurement visit to the design site. For our online clients, we follow another process for measurements and design interviews.  While at our measurement meeting, we discussed with our clients what appliances they wanted in their outdoor kitchen,  and the features and seating they wanted for their patio area.

For their outdoor room and kitchen, our client's wish list included:

  • Outdoor refrigerator
  • Grill
  • Wine Reserve
  • Sink
  • Refuse Collection
  • Storage
  • Seating
  • Leathered granite for countertops.

As an outdoor room designer, you need to also pay attention to what clients do not want in their outdoor room.  They stated no more big table to get in the way as they come in and out of the door.  In this small space, that felt like a challenge.  In reality, it was not.  Our client had impeccable taste.

While taking measurements for the patio/outdoor space to be designed, our clients offered several suggestions for the layout of the design they wanted.  This resulted in six different floor plans. While six different floor plans may sound excessive, it is not.  Here is why...

The Floor Plan and the Elevations

Following our site visit and interview with the clients, along with an understanding of the design aesthetic our clients were wanting, our lead outdoor designer in collaboration with engineers developed several floor plans.  The floor plans were instrumental in showing why one design worked and another did not. Every square inch was utilized and accounted for.   The scale of the furniture was equally important due to the size of the patio area.

All proposed floor plans, selections and elevations to be proposed to our clients were presented in a bound booklet along with a mood board.  Our final design meetings were conducted in our sample room and office at Riviera Outdoor Decor to address any questions our clients.  This is for our online clients as well as our local clients.   Along with a design book, we will show a 3D walk through of the proposed design.  This way our clients know exactly what they are getting and how it will look and fit in their new space.

In the end, we were able to meet all the design requests for our client except for one which we were able to incorporate in the next design they hired us for. This is the best compliment we could have received.

And now without further ado ....the Reveal!

"This turned out so beautiful, I wanted to cry!"  The best compliment we could receive.

With careful planning, we were able to incorporate not just one but three separate conversation and dining areas along with a full size outdoor kitchen.  This is a premier area for outdoor entertainment and dining!
